Eat Smart! Move Smart!
In June 2006, the Utah Department of Health’s Cannon Health Building (CHB) Wellness Council implemented Eat Smart! Move Smart!. The goals of this three-week team competition were to encourage employees to 1) consume at least five fruits and vegetables each day, and 2) get at least 30 minutes of daily physical activity.
Kick Off Event
The event started with a Kick Off. More than 400 employees visited booths, sampled healthy treats, heard an encouraging message from our executive director’s office, enjoyed the weather, music and co-workers, and received a free t-shirt, water bottle and hip pack. Nearly 350 individual employees entered into an individual prize drawing just for attending the Kick Off. More than 150 of them won prizes.
Team Competition
Employees formed teams of 5-8 members. Each team that met the minimum requirements of 5-a-day and 30 minutes of exercise per person each day was entered into a weekly prize drawing. Teams that met those minimum requirements all three weeks of the competition were entered into a grand prize drawing for fitness center memberships.
400 CHB employees participated on Eat Smart! Move Smart! teams. This was about 50% of our population, so it was a huge success.

Hiking and Biking and Walking…Oh, my!
In addition to the team competition, Dr. Sundwall, UDOH Deputy Director, led two weekend events: a bike ride and a hike. We also held nutrition and physical activity wellness seminars. But our most popular event was “I Spy the Exercise Guy.” Each week the Exercise Guy was placed in a different location. Employees had to walk around the campus to search for him, then write down his correct location to enter a prize drawing.
Summary
Eat Smart! Move Smart! is a popular program that we run once every four years. It takes a fair amount of planning to implement, but as you can see from our results, it is worth it!
